A Speed Queen TR7 came in with a simple complaint: it hums, it won’t pump out. Customer mentioned they have small children, so the first thing I figured was a sock or a piece of clothing jammed in the pump impeller. Turns out it was worse than that — the pump was seized solid. You couldn’t turn the impeller by hand. Something had gotten in there and taken the whole pump out.
The good news is these TR7 models are not hard to get into. Two screws on the bottom of the front panel, lift up, and the two clips come right out. The pump sits right up front where you can get to it. The bad news on this particular machine: there was no saving the pump — it was gone.

What Makes the TR7 Different
One thing worth knowing before you work on a TR7: it has no transmission. Most top-load washers have a transmission sitting in the middle of the machine, underneath the basket. The TR7 runs off a long motor shaft with a pulley where the transmission would normally be. That’s how Speed Queen gets the belt-drive reliability — fewer parts, less to break.
When a TR7 hums and won’t drain, your first check is the pump. Hook up a test cord to the pump alone and see if it turns. If you feel it vibrating but not spinning, the impeller is locked. At that point you’re replacing the pump — there’s no unclogging a seized impeller.

Checking Whether the Pump Is Dead or Jammed
Before you order parts, confirm what you have. Disconnect the pump, hook up a test cord, and apply power for a second. If the pump runs freely on the bench, something is jammed in the drain path — check the hoses. If it hums and doesn’t turn, the impeller is locked and the pump needs to come out. A good multimeter saves you money on guesswork. I use the Fluke 101 for continuity and voltage checks on everything in the shop.
The Right Pump for a TR7
Speed Queen parts are not as common on the shelf as Whirlpool parts, which is a reality you deal with when you service these machines. The pump on the TR7 looks a lot like an LG pump — similar housing, similar configuration — but you want to match it right before you order. Take a photo of the pump orientation before you pull it so you can get it back in correctly. For the genuine OEM Speed Queen drain pump, part number 201566P:

When you’re ordering, double-check your model number off the tag inside the lid. TR700, TR5, and TR7 are slightly different machines and the pump specs can vary.
Installing the Replacement Pump
When you pull the old pump, take that picture of the orientation. These pumps have a specific mounting position and getting it 90 degrees off will cause leaks or keep the machine from draining properly. Three screws hold the pump to the front panel bracket. Reconnect the hoses, snap the front panel back in, two screws on the bottom, and you’re done.
